New bus routes to Rainton Bridge Business Park

28 October 2010

Commuters to the Rainton Bridge Business Park near Houghton-le-Spring are now able to use several new bus services linking the site to destinations throughout the north east.

The new bus routes serving the Rainton Bridge Business Park, which is strategically located on the A690 between Sunderland and Durham, include services to and from Newcastle, Gateshead, Heworth and Peterlee.  A new regular shuttle service which connects Houghton-le-Spring to the business park has also been launched, linking many other bus routes including the X20, allowing travellers from Sunderland and Durham easy access to the site.

The new transport links, operated by Go North East, have been provided courtesy of RWE npower, in partnership with Sunderland City Council and Goodman, the developers of Rainton Bridge Business Park. Journey times will take up to 50 minutes from Newcastle and Heworth, 25 minutes from Peterlee and eight minutes from Houghton-le-Spring, with services running regularly throughout the day.

Rainton Bridge Business Park is owned, developed and managed by global property group Goodman, working in partnership with Sunderland City Council. Niall McGilp, regional development director for the company, said: “Rainton Bridge Business Park is conveniently located for all of the North East’s major towns and cities, and the new bus routes provide commuters with an easy journey to and from work, and provide an alternative to commuting by car.”

Volker Beckers, CEO for RWE npower, said: “npower at Rainton Bridge will see us bring together 2,000 employees from regional offices in one state-of-the-art building. The new bus routes and shuttle will play an important part in making their journey to work as smooth and as energy efficient as possible."

Councillor Paul Watson, Leader of Sunderland City Council, said: "It's fantastic to see the launch of two new bus services to Rainton Bridge.

"The City Council has worked closely in partnership with NPower to help the city's residents access jobs in an efficient and sustainable way and these services are a significant step to achieving this.

"I'm sure they will prove popular with both commuters and businesses on the park alike and I wish them every success for the future."

Rainton Bridge Business Park is the location of RWE npower’s new offices at Rainton House, which when fully occupied, will accommodate almost 2,000 staff. Also on the site is the City of Sunderland Council’s E.volve Centre, which is home to more than 30 small high-growth technology companies and Goodman’s first phase of development – the  105,000 sq.ft. Rainton Village campus, which is the regional base for housebuilders McInerney Homes.

In total over 400,000 square feet of commercial property space has been developed across seven buildings on the park since 2005, with scope for roughly the same amount again on the remaining 20 acres of development land.  Goodman, which owns, manages and develops more than 20 business and science parks across the UK, is now looking to target a range of potential new occupiers – including in the region’s SMEs – by offering flexible deals and office space which is sub-divisible from 2,000 sq.ft. up to 90,000 sq.ft.according to the occupiers’ requirements.

Goodman has also produced a guide to the new bus services which can be downloaded here:
